42 teams contested this year's Business League, another of the Club's major events on the annual calendar. The enthusiasm of the players showed that our business sector is alive and well, and living and playing in Hermanus, of course!
The first bowl is about to be sent on its way, with much activity on the bank.
Over the 5 days of the tournament there was serious competition between the various teams, all trying to unseat the 'favourites' , Marifeed, who were the winners of the 2011 event. What with 168 players, various coaches and markers, and a large contingent of family members, friends and hangers-on, the 3 greens endured some heavy traffic over the 5 days of competition. At the end of each day the club pub did a roaring trade, although it was clear that some teams weren't going to wait for the bowling to end before wetting their thistles:
Thirst things first !
The camaraderie of the competition was clearly evident at these early evening gatherings, and many a new contact was made to add to the business networking scene.
On the greens there was evidence of a move towards looking the part of a bowler, both in action and in dress as can be seen in the following photographs:
However good the eyecandy, it was still tough going out there. No quarter was asked for, and none given as the competition moved through towards the final day. Every shot was watched right to it's resting spot, cheers rang out every time there was a 'toucher', and when a measure was called for, team members gathered around to ensure accuracy and fairness.
As the final day progressed it became clear that there might be a new champion team, and when the last bowl was delivered, the incredible Table Tigers emerged triumphant from the battleground - Emile Calitz, Marais Kotze, Denis Welman and Garth Els won by a short head, with the Hermanus Times sponsored team coming in second, 7 points ahead of third-placed Marifeed. Well played all !!
At the prizegiving, Club President Blackie de Swardt thanked all players and every one of the sponsors who made the tournament such a success : Mediclinic, Gateway Superspar, Autohaven, Goddard's Grill, Goozi, Hermanus Toyota, Marifeed, Pappin & Pretorius, S.Herhodlt/Top Carpets and Rossi's Italian Restaurant. The Club is indeed very grateful for your support.
Special mention must be made of the exceptional work done by three gentlemen from the business sector who ensured that there would be excellent support for this tournament:
From L to R: Kurt Matschke, Yster Fouche en Mike Visser.
And so we say a fond farewell to this year's competition, and look forward with keen anticipation to BizLeague 2013 !

Spec Savers Tournament 2011
A most successful Spec Savers Tournament was held at the Club on Tuesday 6th December 2011.
We hosted a full house barring one rink, with 102 Players participating. The day was a resounding success with 15 outside teams from other Clubs participating. All agreed that it was possibly the most successful Spec Savers tournament yet! 20 teams from Hermanus entered, and for a first ever "at home" event the top three teams were from Hermanus Bowls Club, namely:
First - Skip : D. Franken; Second : J. le Grange; Lead : S. de Wet
Second - Skip: G. Erasmus; Second: P. Neethling; Lead: B. Scannell
Third - Skip: K. Kruth; Second: P. de Wet; Lead: K. Hugo
Quite a brilliant achievement all round. The President extends grateful thanks to all the players, officials and assistants who helped make this tournament one to remember.

Before the battle commenced...... much socialising, and such a beautiful day!
After the last bowl was rolled.... a full day on the greens, so now it's time to compare suntans and enjoy a beer!
The team from L'Agulhas club were the tail-end Charlies on the day - here they are (nameless) being consoled by Mr. Gotz, our generous sponsor
